Description
7e relais: Okegawa et l'histoire de Tamaya Shinbei et Kojorô
Scene from a kabuki kyogen play called "Tomogaoka koi no Yamabiraki". Debuted in 1798, the subject matter is taken from an older popular song that deals with the
love of the girl Kojorô who was sold into prostitution, and the Hero, Tamaya Shinbei who tries to rescue her.
The series itself is actually a travel series, depicting the 69 stations of the Kisodaidô, a mountain highway between Edo and Kyoto. This print shows the seventh station of the Kisodaidô, Okegawa. In the upper left corner, a cartouche as a slip of paper with the supposed scenery of the station, but the focus really lies on the people (and the story) depicted in the print.
